Lusaka, Zambia, 9 June 2025 – Last Friday, the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment (MGEE) through the Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation Program (SPAR6C) facilitated the meeting for the Zambia Climate Change Research Network (ZCCRN). The meeting brought together participants from government, research institutions, academia and students from the Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation (SPAR6C) Research Mentorship Program, to discuss and define Zambia’s strategic research agenda on climate change mitigation and carbon markets.
Although Zambia has been affected by climate change, research information on its effects on Zambia’s environment and on local communities needs to be further updated in order to inform policy development and implementation.
The Zambia Climate Change Research Network is part of a wider global network, supported by the Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation (SPAR6C) Program and co-led by UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre, known as the Community of Practice for Article 6 Implementing Countries (CoP-ASIC). This Community of Practice aims to build national expertise in research, analysis and climate change governance and bridges the gap between academia, government, and the private sector in order to foster long-term capacity development in climate change policy and carbon markets. Additionally, CoP-ASIC implements a Research Mentorship Program (RMP) which identifies and supports selected students to build research capacity and career development in climate change and carbon markets. So far, six (6) Zambian students have participated in the SPAR6C RMP, with each cohort, students are expected to undertake and develop a research paper aligned with Zambia’s priorities on Climate Change and Article 6 implementation and carbon markets.
“Researchers from the University of Zambia, the Copperbelt University, Mulungushi University, National Institute of Public Administration, Zambia Agriculture Research Institute, Golden Valley Agricultural Research Trust, Zambia Institute for Policy Analysis and Research and the Ministry of Technology and Science have come together to discuss priority research areas for Zambia with regards to climate change. Our aim as ZCCRN is to conduct high quality research which will inform policy decision making and build climate resilience for local communities” – said Mr. Herrick Mwewa, Principal Climate Change Officer, Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, during his opening remarks.
Aside from discussions on Zambia’s strategic research agenda on climate change mitigation and Carbon Markets, the meeting further provided an opportunity for the 2025 cohort of RMP students to present their ongoing research for review and feedback under the various research clusters.
The event was supported by the Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation (SPAR6C) Program, led by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) with GFA Consulting Group and UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre as the leading delivery partners in Zambia.
