The Department of Environment Management is responsible for coordinating and facilitating the development and implementation of policies, programs and projects for the management and conservation of the environment in order to ensure sustainability
The Department shall perform the following specific functions:
- Facilitate the development of policies and legislation on environmental management in order to provide an appropriate framework for the effective management and implementation of programs.
- Conduct research and development on environment in order to facilitate informed decision making.
- Provide technical guidance and support to stakeholder institutions on matters relating to environmental management and protection in order to enhance institutional capacity and ensure socio-economic wellbeing of communities.
- Collaborate with stakeholders in the development and implementation of environmental programs in order to ensure a harmonized approach to programs execution.
- Implement public awareness programs on the environment in order to foster community participation in environmental management.
- Facilitate the domestication and implementation of international conventions, treaties and agreements on environmental matters in order to conform to international best practices and promote Zambia’s interests.
- Monitor and evaluate the implementation of environmental programs and projects in order to recommend appropriate interventions and ensure attainment of set goals.
- Document Zambia’s current natural capital assets in order to facilitate effective decision making.
Environment Management Unit

- Develop policies and legislation on the environment in order to provide an appropriate framework for the effective management and implementation of programs.

- Collaborate with Stakeholders in the development and implementation of environmental programs in order to ensure a harmonized approach to program execution.
- Develop and implement public awareness programs on the environment in order to foster community participation in environmental management.
- Collaborate with National, Regional and International Organizations on Conventions, Agreements and Treaties for domestication and implementation of environmental programs in order to safeguard Zambia’s interest.
- Conduct Capacity Building for communities and other relevant stakeholders on environmental and ecosystems management to enhance sustainability.
- Coordinate with others the implementation of national programs and projects on environmental management in order to ensure systematic and harmonized approach to programs implementation.
Environmental Research Unit
The Unit is responsible for carrying out research needed to support the management of the environment.
The Unit performs the following specific functions: –
- Conduct research on environment and ecosystems in order to facilitate informed decision making.
- Maintain a database on the status of the environment for decision making.
- Publish and disseminate research findings on environmental protection in local and international journals and papers to enhance awareness.
- Monitor the conduct of environmental research in the country in order to inform policy and strategic decision making.
- Maintain Spatial Data information on Zambia’s the current natural capital assets in order to facilitate effective decision making.
- Collaborate with National, Regional and International Research organizations on environment in order to share information and safeguard national interests.
